Old Hall Hotel, Buxton

The Square, Buxton, Derbyshire, SK17 6BD

Rating:

Reputed to be the oldest hotel in England, one time host to Mary Queen of Scots. Perfectly located opposite the Pavilion Gardens (23 acres of parkland) & Opera House. Daniel Defo, writing in 1727 and staying at the hotel, said, 'This is indeed a very special place.' Which of course it is, even to this day. The Old Hall's mellowed walls and many ancient rooms reflect the pedigree of its rich past, yet provide every comfort, cuisine and high technology expected from the best hotels of today. Surrounded by hills, hills and even more hills in the heart of England's beautiful Peak District, in the elegant Spa town of Buxton, just across a leafy Georgian square from one of the most exquisite Opera Houses in this country. This is one of those hotels you often think about, yet rarely find. And when you do, you only tell your best friends. If you are dining from the Table d'Hote menu in our excellent restaurant, or enjoying the Chef's Special in our popular wine bar, you will soon appreciate the extra thought and creativity of choice in our menus and wine lists. The Cavendish and Talbot rooms are available for private dinner parties and functions. The wine bar is open all day and evening for coffee, afternoon tea, an all-day menu, and, very importantly, pre and post theatre supper. It is very much the haunt for theatre-goers, actors and musicians. A guest once bought a second-hand Richard III outfit complete with crown (but no horse). We have two residents' lounges, one with television and the other for quiet relaxation, perhaps with a coffee or a drink. However, it contains a concert grand piano complete with parlour palm. You might have to contend with a very serious soprano practising for the evening's opera performance. The hotel is just across the leafy square from one of the most exquisite opera houses in the British Isles. Home of the annual international Gilbert and Sullivan Festival and the Buxton Opera Festival, The Buxton Opera House hosts opera, theatre and concerts throughout the year. The Old Hall Hotel is the first choice venue of theatre people. With our well-known pre and post-theatre suppers and special theatregoer room tariffs, including theatre tickets, it is a natural setting for a wonderful evening at the Opera followed by dinner and a comfortable night's sleep.
